England’s Harry Brook has withdrawn from the IPL for the second year running after pulling out of his deal with Delhi Capitals in order to focus on international cricket.
The batter – linked to the vacant white-ball captaincy role with his country following Jos Buttler’s resignation after the Champions Trophy exit – could now face a two-year ban from the IPL.
A suspension for overseas players who withdraw from the T20 competition following the auction came into place after the 10 franchises became frustrated at late pull-outs.
Tournament officials have stated exceptions can be made for injury or medical issues.
Brook apologises ‘unreservedly’ to Delhi and their supporters
Brook wrote on social media: “I have made the very difficult decision to pull out of the upcoming IPL. I apologise unreservedly to the Delhi Capitals and their supporters.
“I love cricket. Ever since I was a young boy I have dreamt of playing for my country and I am extremely thankful to have the opportunity to play the game I love at this level.
“With the guidance of people I trust, I have taken the time to seriously consider this decision.
“It is a really important time for England cricket and I want to fully commit to preparing for the upcoming series.
“In order to do this, I need time to recharge after the busiest period in my career to date.
“I know not everyone will understand, and I don’t expect them to, but I have to do what I believe is right and playing for my country remains my priority and focus.
“I remain hugely grateful for the opportunities I have been given and the support I receive.”
Brook puts England first ahead of big year
Brook opted against playing for Delhi in last year’s IPL following the death of his grandmother.
The 26-year-old is an all-format player for England and any leadership role – either in 50-over cricket, the T20 game or both – would add to his workload.
England have a busy year of Test cricket coming up with five games at home to India this summer followed by an away Ashes tour from November as they look to win the urn in Australia for the first time since 2010/11.
England return to action from May 22 for a four-day Test against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge, before six white-ball games against West Indies precede the start of the India Test series from June 20.
Brook has played one season in the IPL to date, featuring for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2023 when he scored a 55-ball century against Kolkata Knight Riders but mustered just 190 runs in 11 matches overall.
The 2025 IPL – live on Sky Sports – begins on Saturday March 22 as defending champions Kolkata play Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Eden Gardens.
