The dense fog continued to grip northern India on Friday, with parts of Bihar and Punjab witnessing zero visibility, whereas another spell of the cold wave is expected in a couple of days in the northwest.

Another spell of cold waves is expected in Northwest India starting 14th-15th January.

By Kumar Kunal: A thick blanket of fog continued to shroud a vast stretch of northern India early Friday morning. Bihar’s Purnea and Gaya recorded 25m visibility, while the visibility in Patna and Bhagalpur was 50m.

The weather station at Safdarjung in Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 9.8 degrees Celsius, and Palam recorded a minimum temperature of 12.4 degrees Celsius till 8.30 am. Palam and Safdarjung areas registered improved visibility at 500m.

Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich recorded 25m visibility, while Lucknow, Gorakhpur and Varanasi recorded 200m each, and Agra witnessed visibility of 250m.

The visibility in Punjab’s Bhatinda and Haryana’s Hisar stood at 0 and 25, respectively. In west Rajasthan’s Churu, Jaisalmer and Bikaner, visibility was 200. In Odisha’s Balasore and Bhubaneswar, it was 50m.

Another spell of cold wave is expected in northwest India starting January 14-15. The IMD said that the spell would be intense and continue till January 20 as the minimum temperature in Delhi and adjoining areas will touch 3-4 degrees Celsius once again.

The maximum temperature will also fall and could be around 15 degrees Celsius. Some areas of Rajasthan might see sub-zero temperatures as well.

According to the weather office, very dense fog is when visibility is between 0 and 50 metres, between 51 and 200 metres is dense, between 201 and 500 metres moderate, and between 501 and 1,000 metres shallow.

Some flights (Delhi-San Francisco/Kathmandu, Delhi-Chandigarh-Kullu, Delhi-Jaipur, Delhi-Dharamshala-Chandigarh, Delhi-Shimla- Dharamshala, Delhi-Dehradun) are delayed due to fog in the national capital. Visuals from Terminal-3 Delhi airport, reported news agency ANI.

Heavy snowfall eluded the mid and higher hills, while light to moderate snowfall and rain was reported from isolated places as maximum temperatures rose appreciably across Himachal Pradesh on Thursday, reported news agency PTI.

Una recorded a maximum temperature of 22 degrees Celsius – the hottest in the state. The towns of Dharamsala, Shimla, Manali, Narkanda, Kufri and Dalhousie recorded day temperatures of 19 degrees Celsius, 12.4 degrees, 9.2 degrees, 6.6 degrees, 6.2 degrees and 4.4 degrees, respectively.

Kothi in Kullu district received 15 cm of snow while Hansa, Gondla, Kusumseri and Keylong in Lahaul and Spiti recorded 10 cm, 5.7 cm, 5.6 cm and 3.5 cm, respectively.

Meanwhile, Delhi saw an intense cold wave spell from January 5 to January 9, the second longest in the month in a decade, according to the IMD data.

It has also recorded over 50 hours of dense fog this month so far, which is the highest since 2019.

The meteorologist attributed the long spell of intense cold to a layer of dense fog persisting over the Indo-Gangetic plains for the last 10-11 days and a large gap between two western disturbances, which meant frosty winds from the snow-clad mountains blew in for a longer-than-usual period.

The Indo-Gangetic plains have a lot of moisture owing to a large number of water bodies and rivers in the region.

High moisture content, low temperatures and calm winds are the recipes for dense fog, the IMD official explained.

The city has recorded below-normal maximum temperatures this month so far due to dense fog that reduced sunshine hour.
