Amar Singh Chamkila

Amar Singh who was born in a Dalit family in Punjab used to work in a socks manufacturing factory as a teenager, whereas his heart and soul were wrenched in creating music. He finally chose to break the shackles and started building contacts with musicians in the state with the help of his acquaintances. He soon started singing with Amarjot Kaur and the duo rose to fame but his brash lyrics also ignited fury across Punjab. This led to his brutal criticism and both him and Amarjot were shot to death at the peak of their career.  The film is directed by Imtiaz Ali and stars Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra in pivotal roles. The film was released on OTT on April 12 this year.

Sam Bahadur

The film is based on Sam Manekshaw who served in five wars over more than 40 years. He was among one of the most decorated officers of the Indian Army. The plot of the film revolves around the high and low points of Sam Manekshaw’s life and  who went on to become the first Indian Army officer to be promoted to the rank of Field Marshal. The titular character is beautifully essayed by Vicky Kaushal and director Meghna Gulzar has kept the story as authentic and close to the truth as possible. The film was released on December 1, 2023.

Main Atal Hoon

This film covers the remarkable life and political career of Former Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a legendary figure in Indian politics. It explores Vajpayee Ji’s complex personality and captures his essence as a politician, a poet, and a gentleman. The film also highlights India’s emergence as a powerful nation under his leadership. Directed by Ravi Jadhav, the film stars Pankaj Tripathi in the titular role. The film released on January 19 this year.

Pippa

This biographical war film tells the story of Captain Balram Singh Mehta of India’s 45 Cavalry unit and his siblings who served on the eastern front during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. Named PT-76 after the Russian amphibious battle tank that floats on water like an empty ‘pippa’ (tin) of ghee, the movie follows Mehta’s growth as he takes on a role in a war to free Bangladesh. The film stars Ishaan Khattar, Soni Razdan and Mrunal Thakur in major roles and was directed by Raja Krishna Menon. The film was released on November 10, 2023.

Mission Raniganj

This biopic starring Akshay Kumar, Parineeti Chopra and Ravi Kishan is based on Mining engineer Jaswant Singh Gill leading a challenging rescue mission to save 65 miners trapped in a flooded coal mine. It focuses on his unwavering determination and diligence. The film is directed by Tinu Suresh Desai and was released in cinemas on October 6, 2023.

12th Fail

Based on IPS  officer Manoj Kumar Sharma, the film shows the courage of his convictions as he decides to return to school and take control of his future at the UPSC, the world’s most competitive exam, where millions of students seek to pass. This film is a tear jerker and perfect motivation for anyone trying to achieve something in the academic field. The film is directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and stars Vikrant Massey and Medha Shankr in pivotal roles. It won millions of hearts upon its release on October 27 last year.

Maidaan

Inspired by Syed Abdul Rahim, the manager and coach of the Indian national football team, who is considered the architect of Indian football, this film encapsulates the golden age of Indian football, which ran from 1952 to 1962. The film stars Ajay Devgn, Priyamani, Keerthy Suresh and Boman Irani in pivotal roles and is directed by Amit Sharma. The film released earlier this month on April 10.

Swatantrya Veer Savarkar

This film follows the life journey of Indian freedom fighter and reformer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, popularly known as Veer Savarkar. He founded the Free India Society to organise Indian students studying in England to fight for independence and even made major contributions towards the abolishment of untouchability. The film stars Randeep Hooda and Ankita Lokhande in pivotal roles and was directed by Randeep Hooda himself. It was released on March 22 this year.

Shershaah

When talking about biopics, Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani’s Shershaah has to make it to the list. It is based on the story of Indian soldier Capt. Vikram Batra, recipient of the Param Vir Chakra medal, whose valour and unwavering heroism in driving Pakistani soldiers from Indian territory played a major role in India’s eventual victory in the Kargil War in 1999. The film also focuses on his love story with Dimple who he wants to marry. The film was directed by Vishnivardhan and was released on OTT on August 12 in 2021.

Srikanth

This is an upcoming biopic based on the life of Srikanth Bolla, a visually-impaired Indian industrialist and the founder of Bollant Industries. The film highlights his work towards the visually impaired while facing entrepreneurial challenges and navigating personal sacrifices. The film stars Rajkummar Rao and Alaya F in pivotal roles and is directed by Tushar Hiranandani. The film is set to release in cinemas on May 10.
