Cypher, written and directed by Chris Moukarbel, took the best U.S. narrative feature prize at the Tribeca Festival. The pseudo-documentary about the rise of Tierra Whack world premiered here last week. The jury cited “its kaleidoscopic use of music, created imagery and found materials, in service of an interrogation of celebrity, conspiracy culture and the nature of narrative reality itself.”
Smoking Tigers won Best Performance in the U.S. narrative category for Ji-Young Yoon as well as Best Screenplay for So Young Shelly Yo, who directed the film about a Korean-American girl staggering under her parents’ separation in her feature directorial debut. Best Cinematography went to Caroline Costa for The Graduates, directed by Hannah Peterson, about a high school senior facing the one-year mark of a tragic school shooting that took her boyfriend.
The 22nd annual Tribeca Festival runs June 7-18. It announced the winning storytellers today at an awards ceremony at Racket NYC.
Brazilian filmmaker Guto Parente’s A Strange Path won for Best International Narrative Feature. It follows David, an experimental filmmaker, who returns to Brazil for the first time in ten years when his feature is set to premiere at a local festival. Star Carlos Francisco took the best performance award for the film, which also nabbed Best Cinematography for Linga Acácio.
Best Documentary Feature went to Between the Rains by Andrew H. Brown and Moses Thuranira. A young man’s journey to adapt to radically changing climate conditions and prolonged drought in the Turkana-Ngaremara community Northern Kenya. The jury cited it “for craft, storytelling, impact — and above all a raw, elegant coming-of-age portrait of resilience that unanimously blew us away.” Brown also won for Best Cinematography for a doc.
“We take great pride in recognizing this year’s collection of diverse, trailblazing works and creators,” said Cara Cusumano, festival director and VP of programming. “Today’s honorees are a compelling testament that storytelling across genres and platforms is on a vibrant and inspiring trajectory.”
Awards were also handed out in immersive, games and audio storytelling.

It skillfully juggled multiple storylines and journeys with nuance, emotional honesty, deft sequencing until the final beautiful scene.”
Best Cinematography in a U.S. Narrative Feature: Caroline Costa for The Graduates, (United States) – World Premiere. Jury comment: “From the very first frame, it was clear the cinematographer was someone in complete command of their craft. From their naturalistic approach to lighting to tight compositions, the cinematographer supported the emotional journey of the film at every turn.”
U.S. Narrative Feature Special Jury Mention: Monica Sorelle for Mountains, (United States) – World Premiere. Jury comment: “For its authentic, specific portrayal of a culture we had not seen on screen. A deeply emotional and empathetic portrait of a family in a changing world with brilliant leading performances.”
